You sure touch on all the fun anniversaries, don't you? :D

I wonder if the lack of war-crime-accountability going forward is really as simple as "Cold War exists" - even Russia having a seat on the UN is a farce, not to say the US is much more promising as an arbiter of just conflict these days. It's hard to think of basically a single moment in the last 80 years where it wasn't in the interests of some powerful country everyone had to pretend was an equal peer to deny any genocides that happened after the Holocaust. Heck, they didn't even agree on the Holocaust - as far as Russians are concerned it was about Slavs (and by the numbers they aren't wrong - I could rant for a long time on the very different perception average people have of the death count based on where they were brought up) while everyone else has mostly been getting a version of the story very heavily mediated by Israeli organizations that focus disproportionately on Jews (not that a proportional tale of genocide wouldn't still be very Jew-heavy. Just that my family of Ukrainian Jews would've been screwed either way and I don't think either side gets to call dibs on how narrow my family tree is these days.)

Prior to Nuremberg the United States had executed only one individual for war crimes. That was Henry Wirz, the commandant of the Andersonville POW camp, hung in 1865.
